And you wait and you wait. At noon you decide to phone the company to make sure that someone is definitely coming and you are told that the repair man is very busy, but he will be with you later in the afternoon. Again no definite time can be given, but someone will definitely be there. So you wait in all afternoon, watching the
minutes and hours tick by. Aaaaaarghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We live in a world where so many fine words are spoken about "customer service", but the reality is that if you needed to have a washing machine repaired and the above happened, you might scream out loud, but it wouldn't really surprise you. In fact, tradesmen are notoriously so bad
when it comes to keeping appointments that if one does turn up on time, what
should be par for the course actually EXCEEDS customer expectations!
You need your washing machine fixed? No problem. We can have a service engineer with you at 10am tomorrow morning without fail - and if he arrives more than an hour late the repair will be done free of labour costs. You'll need to take time off work to be there?
Tomorrow comes, you go to work, come back home, and at 7pm sharp there's a knock on the door. My engineer comes in, fixes the washing machine, wipes up the pool of water that has leaked onto your floor, and leaves you with his card in case you have any further problems. Not only is the company's phone number on the card, but the engineer's own mobile phone number is on there too so you can speak directly to the engineer who carried out the repair. Having had a few washing machines repaired over
the years, I think I can safely say that my washing machine repair business
will have exceeded your expectations. You're happy and I'm happy, what our American cousins call a win-win situation. All entrepreneurs need customers to be
successful. Three words, that's all it takes to guarantee business success. Ever tried telephoning one of the big computer companies when you've got a problem with your desk top? Does the sound of the engaged tone ring any bells? Or the crick in the neck you develop waiting for someone to actually answer your call? A couple of years ago I bought a new computer
from a company and part of the warranty included on-site repairs within 24
hours. Eventually I did get to speak to someone who assured me that everything was in hand and that a service engineer would be with me within 24 hours. Fool that I am, I assumed 24 hours was approximately equal to a day, and so expected to have the computer up and running again by this time tomorrow. No such luck. When no service engineer appeared the next day, I battled my way through the "your call is in a queue and will be answered shortly" routine, only to be told that "within 24 hours" actually meant "within three business days". The logic was that since there are eight business hours in a day, the company was keeping to the terms of the warranty! Needless to say that when the time came to buy another computer, that company did not get my business. In fact, they obviously didn't get much repeat business from other people either because this particular computer company is now no more. Not that there aren't plenty of other computer companies with equally poor customer service standards for you to choose from. As fate would have it, I'm not in the washing
machine repair or the computer business. I use computers, but have to admit
here and now that I'm not particularly interested in washing machines full
stop. You deserve better. Your family deserves better. And what's more, you know it. And yet we are so busy working our lives away that we forget the one word that can set us free. Choice. They don't want you to know it, but whether you partake in the rat race or not is a matter of choice. Your choice. And you can choose to walk away today. In fact it's never too late to shout, "Stop the world - I want to get off!" We are at the dawning of a new era for the
entrepreneurial spirit. Technological advances in the last decade have
catapulted the opportunities available to the likes of you and me to make
serious money to incredible new heights. No more rush hour traffic. No more crowded trains. No more deadlines and targets to be met so that you can line the pockets of your boss. The world really is your oyster when you are no longer tied to someone else's desk, machine or till. There has never been a better time in the
history of mankind for individuals to declare financial independence and seek a
new way forward, freeing themselves from the shackles of wage slavery and
steering far from the rocks of poverty. Another problem will be making sure you don't
end up being led down the garden path by the crooks and quacks who are fleecing
