Your washing machine needs repaired so you arrange for someone to come and fix it. The service company can't give you a definite time, but assure you that someone will be with you tomorrow. So you take the day off work and you stay at home waiting for the repair man to call.

And you wait and you wait.

At noon you decide to phone the company to make sure that someone is definitely coming and you are told that the repair man is very busy, but he will be with you later in the afternoon. Again no definite time can be given, but someone will definitely be there.

So you wait in all afternoon, watching the minutes and hours tick by.

Eventually, five o'clock comes and you decide to phone again - only to be told that the repair man finished at 4.30pm and if he hasn't already been, he won't be with you until tomorrow.

You explain that you've taken the day off work because you were told he would be calling today, but are told that although they do try to get to all customers within 24 hours, they can't guarantee it. But someone will be with you tomorrow. The voice on the other end of the phone can't give you an exact time, but it will definitely be tomorrow.

We live in a world where so many fine words are spoken about "customer service", but the reality is that if you needed to have a washing machine repaired and the above happened, you might scream out loud, but it wouldn't really surprise you.

In fact, tradesmen are notoriously so bad when it comes to keeping appointments that if one does turn up on time, what should be par for the course actually EXCEEDS customer expectations!

But if I owned a washing machine repair business, here's how I would make my fortune by really exceeding customer expectations.

You need your washing machine fixed? No problem. We can have a service engineer with you at 10am tomorrow morning without fail - and if he arrives more than an hour late the repair will be done free of labour costs.

You'll need to take time off work to be there?

Well, how about if we arrange for an engineer to call in the evening, say at 7pm, when you are home from work? Would that be more convenient for you? Yes, we have engineers working from 6am to 2pm and others working 2pm to 10pm. And if the engineer is running late, he will have the courtesy to phone you to let you know. What's more, all of our engineers are members of the Washing Machine Repairers Federation and our work is guaranteed for 12 months.

Tomorrow comes, you go to work, come back home, and at 7pm sharp there's a knock on the door. My engineer comes in, fixes the washing machine, wipes up the pool of water that has leaked onto your floor, and leaves you with his card in case you have any further problems. Not only is the company's phone number on the card, but the engineer's own mobile phone number is on there too so you can speak directly to the engineer who carried out the repair.

Having had a few washing machines repaired over the years, I think I can safely say that my washing machine repair business will have exceeded your expectations.

Ever tried telephoning one of the big computer companies when you've got a problem with your desk top?

A couple of years ago I bought a new computer from a company and part of the warranty included on-site repairs within 24 hours.

The day came when the computer died, and I found myself on a quest for the service department through a minefield of "press one for monitor faults, press two for printer faults, press three if you like sugar in your coffee . . . ".

I must have spent what amounted to a couple of wasted hours waiting for some sort of close encounter of the human kind.

Eventually I did get to speak to someone who assured me that everything was in hand and that a service engineer would be with me within 24 hours. 

Fool that I am, I assumed 24 hours was approximately equal to a day, and so expected to have the computer up and running again by this time tomorrow. No such luck.

When no service engineer appeared the next day, I battled my way through the "your call is in a queue and will be answered shortly" routine, only to be told that "within 24 hours" actually meant "within three business days". The logic was that since there are eight business hours in a day, the company was keeping to the terms of the warranty!

Needless to say that when the time came to buy another computer, that company did not get my business. In fact, they obviously didn't get much repeat business from other people either because this particular computer company is now no more. Not that there aren't plenty of other computer companies with equally poor customer service standards for you to choose from.

As fate would have it, I'm not in the washing machine repair or the computer business. I use computers, but have to admit here and now that I'm not particularly interested in washing machines full stop.

In fact my only interest at the moment is in showing you that there is more to life than spending eight, ten, twelve hours at the office or on the factory floor, just so you can struggle to pay the bills, keep a roof over your head, and enjoy two weeks in Benidorm every Summer (if you're lucky).

You deserve better. Your family deserves better. And what's more, you know it.

And yet we are so busy working our lives away that we forget the one word that can set us free.

Choice.

They don't want you to know it, but whether you partake in the rat race or not is a matter of choice. Your choice. And you can choose to walk away today. In fact it's never too late to shout, "Stop the world - I want to get off!"
